Our New Zealand Kauri is the largest tree found in the Agathis genus and the only Agathis species native to New Zealand and is considered a taonga (a treasure) species by many Māori here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Kauri played an important role in many aspects of early Māori culture: integrated in creation mythology, rituals, war, art and everyday life. The Kauri's gum had many valuable functions to the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa. The gum was burned as an insecticide in kumara plots, wrapped in flax to make torches and also used as a chewing gum (kapia). Kauri resin was also burnt and mixed with fat to create the ink for moko (facial tattooing) of rangatira.
